Losing Weight With No Thyroid, Part 7

Recently I was asked by a few people to share more about my weight loss journey and what is working for me. As you may know, my goal is lost 36 pounds by July 11, thus far I have lost 16. I have a long way to go but it’s less about the numbers and more about the self confidence I have gained. I’m truly falling in love with me.

For those of you new to my blog and my journey you will find a brief synopsis below. If you came here for a quick fix, I’m sorry, you will be disappointed. This is a lifetime commitment to health.

Even as I write this post, I’m restraining myself from eating all the parmesan bread bites my brother just ordered. I’m upstate and completely out of my routine for at least a couple more days. Though taking a break is always good, it’s vital to still make the right decisions. Habits are formed by continuing to make those decisions and before you know it, it’s not a decision at all.

And yes, I had exactly five parmesan bites and I enjoyed every second. I did that because sometimes you have to indulge and move past. Now, that does mean every time you feel for that ice cream or those wings or whatever, you should indulge. But rather, what I’m saying is that you need to be realistic. I’ve been eating poorly most of my life. I can’t change years of conditioning in what’s been just a few months. It is going to take time and patience. I find that having “small cheats” like this prevent me from binging for days. But thats for me, take the time to figure out what works for you.

Attitude – None of this is possible without the right attitude. You have to make a commitment to whatever is that you are trying to accomplish. I talk to myself, I write to myself, I listen to motivational speeches/songs and I read and reread books like The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success and The Power of Positive Thinking. I truly want to get my mind right because without that, nothing is possible. Control of the mind is foundational to success.

Water – I drink at least 100oz a day, that’s about 6-7 regular water bottles such as Poland Spring. I keep a gallon at work and constantly refill my blender bottle throughout the day.

Diet – People always ask, what diet are you on? I’m not on a diet at all, it’s a lifestyle change! I stay away from processed foods. I typically only eat chicken, turkey or fish. And most importantly, I’m having a love affair with produce. I downloaded the MyPlate app a couple months back. I’m not big on counting calories because people can get caught up in the numbers. But what it allows me to do is be conscious of everything that I am putting in my body. So I stay away from sour patch kids!

Exercise – I’m fully committed to moving the body. I light weights, I run, I take fitness classes, and I play sports. I mix it up because I get bored. Moving is unique to what works for your body. Just start by making a commitment to moving 2-3 times a week, for example. You have to write it down and make it a smart(specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely) goal. Don’t sign up for a gym across town when you know that you’ll never go over there. Be realistic!

I wish you nothing but success on your journey, maybe it is not about weight loss for you. But whatever it is, stay the course!

  1. Dear Venesa, I finally got to read your last post. Keep up the good work. As we discussed when I saw you at Gertrude Ederle, consistency is the key. Even if you fall off the consistency wagon you can always get back on! One day at a time girlfriend, one day at a time.
